Myth: Sheep Wool Is Not Suitable for Warm Weather

One of the most common myths in equestrian sport is the belief that sheep wool is suitable only for colder conditions. In reality, its unique properties make it an excellent material even when temperatures rise. This applies to saddle pads, rugs, and boots that remain in direct contact with the horse’s body during work.

Wool does not function like a conventional insulating material. Its primary role is to regulate temperature and manage moisture, which makes it particularly valuable in equipment used during warmer weather.

Why Wool Works in Warm Weather Too

In saddle pads, cooling and exercise rugs, and protective boots, wool:

  • effectively helps dissipate excess heat,
  • absorbs sweat and gradually releases it to the outside,
  • reduces the sensation of moisture against the horse’s skin,
  • helps maintain a stable under-saddle environment.
Wool and Horse Comfort During Summer Training

In the summer, saddle pads and leg protectors are put to the test under particularly demanding conditions. Intense training, high temperatures, and sweat mean that the material plays a crucial role in managing the horse’s comfort.

Sheep wool acts as a natural buffer. It protects the skin from excessive moisture, reduces the risk of chafing, and helps maintain stable conditions for muscle function.

In exercise rugs and stable rugs containing wool, these properties help prevent sudden temperature fluctuations, for example after a workout, while also helping to maintain an optimal body temperature.

Synthetic Materials vs Wool

Many synthetic materials, particularly in warm weather, tend to trap heat and moisture close to the skin. Saddle pads and boots can quickly become damp, leaving the horse working in less comfortable conditions.

Wool works differently. It breathes, responds to changes in temperature, and adapts to conditions rather than trapping them. This is why it performs so well in equipment used intensively, including during the warmer months of the year.

Sheep Wool Performs Well in Warm Weather Too

Products containing wool are an excellent choice during the summer, particularly:

  • in saddle pads used for daily training,
  • in rugs used after work, when temperature stability is important,
  • in boots for horses that are prone to chaffing,
  • during transport, in the stable, and after competitions.
Wool for Every Season

Sheep wool is not a seasonal material. It is a functional material that performs effectively in saddle pads, rugs, and boots throughout the year. Its ability to manage temperature and moisture helps support the horse’s well-being regardless of weather conditions.

Well-informed riders appreciate and make use of these unique properties all year round.
